To celebrate the release of Mangoré, por Amor al Arte, a feature length biopic on the guitarist-composer Agustin Barrios, I had a conversation with the great Paraguayan guitarist Berta Rojas.
Berta talks about her role in the film, and the prominent position that Barrios holds for the country of Paraguay. She also talks about her current projects in Paraguay and her latest release, Historia del Tango. Tacquito Militar by Berta Rojas & Camerata Bariloche And did you know that Barrios is on Paraguayan currency?
Here is the trailer for the film

Thank you Simon for bringing this podcast to us. I greatly admire Berta Rojas’ playing and can’t wait to see the film. Thanks for posting the trailer for the Agustin Barrios film and the video by Ms. Rojas!
Sorry I can’t talk anymore, I’m off to practice on this lovely Sunday in the outskirts of Tucson, Az.

Hi Simon,
I’m no expert in copyright or public domain by any means, but in my limited understanding Barrios’s music has been in public domain since his death because he had no heirs and didn’t direct anyone to have rights over his music in his will. One of the qualifications of public domain is that one’s music was never protected by copyright to begin with—I believe that this applies to Barrios’s music immediately after his death.
Even if this weren’t the case, for US copyright law—it is indeed different for different countries—Barrios’s music would have qualified for public domain last year (which was the seventieth year after his death).
I’m happy to be corrected, but this is what I’ve learned from others who actually know what they’re talking about!
Peace,
Dave
Hi Simon, this was wonderful. I think Ms Rojas pic for the guitar voice of Barrios was insightful in that his music was steeped in Paraguayan culture such as the music of Paraguay itself. I imagine the roots of the music persists in areas.
