Thanks for another stimulating podcast, Simon. I have to admit that I would normally not have been very interested in this album, but Ben Verdery‘s enthusiasm makes me want to give it a hearing.
Thank you Simon, for another interesting listen. I found Ben’s discussion/acknowledgment of the difference between recording art and live art very refreshing. I’ve long had a bias against what I refer to as “manufactured music,” which essentially encompasses everything recorded in a studio. And listening to Ben talk about recording two bars here and later five bars there, certainly reinforces the “manufactured” aspect of the end result. That said, he’s helped me gain an appreciation for how the “willful suspension of disbelief,” so to speak, is necessary to fully appreciate this still comparatively new and ever evolving art form. And it comes as no surprise that Ben continues to push this envelope. I’m looking forward to listening to his latest offering with “new,” liberated ears!
What a wonderful podcast! Thank you so much, Simon and Ben. The excerpts inspired me to immediately purchase the album. And I will remember Ben’s observations of what was involved in creating the music when I listen to it. I’ve never been inclined to play electric guitar and I probably still won’t, but I’m thinking about it ;-)
